Hey one and all,

Bubbles and are heading to New York for the July 4th weekend and then off to do some cycling in the Vermont/New Hampshire region. I do not of any Map My Ride routes. Any of my brothers or sisters know of any or of someone who may?

Likely ride before 530 as worked all night and want to settle in early tonight. Hope to head by 3-330 at the latest.

Turbo said...

plan to be as SS for 530 hope some others are able to make it out. Rat- I know Woody did some cycling in NH/Ver area and I have a co-worker in moncton that mentioned it before I'll query him. No charge.

Omni said...

Rat,

I have a couple of books of New England Rides and some maps (both on Map my Ride and the paper kind) of New Hampshire rides {the state publishes a descent series of ride maps that you can pick-up in most cycle shops}.

Anyone looking to slip out for an easy jaunt this afternoon/evening? I'm available after 16:30.

No Doubt (The Wad) said...

Bubbles, I'm guessing you had help with those routes. Now, who could that've been?

Garrison? I may venture out and tag along for this one.

Omni said...

Out for an easy 50K this evening ... caught-up with a clutch of Free-Wheelers and tagged along over the dam with them.

The entire outing was an excuse .. err opportunity ... to test the new cadence sensor ... and confirm how much of a diesel I am.

Smoothie - I cannot commute tomorrow, but may be able to join on Thursday &| Friday.

steve said...

Smoothie, im in for the commute Wednesday.

Mel said...

Steve: I leave at 7:30 sharp, if you roll past my house before then, I'll look for you. Look for me. If all else fails, I'll be on the corner on Union at 7:35 a.m. Anyone else?

I thought with that some rumours of Donut, having such a great schedule. It would be prudent to to confirm, he does in fact have employment. Eye witness account not 1, but 2 days in a row. Of afor mentioned suspect boarding into Police Crusier in full attire. 0600hrs
Rest easy fellow cyclist, JJ is on the beat.

Like his spin, Turbo provided me a smooth segue into a new challenge for the team ... especially those with a great schedule, like Donut and Rat.

How would you like to ride the {virtual} tour de france?

It's simple ... ride each day of the tour; record your results (using GPS, a MapMyRide app, or manually); and upload them. {Apparently if you submit via manual recording/entry, your results will not qualify for the jersey competitions}

The folks at MapMyRide.com will process all the numbers and scale/extrapolate each submission to the real tdf stage of the day {the "science" behind how they plan to do so is not clear ... so we'll call it "magic" for now} and declare the podium for the day's stage (stage winner and the jerseys).

You can even register teams ... so perhaps OSB makes an virtual appearance in the virtual tdf this year?

For more info follow the link to MapMyRide.com

Turbo said...

Team OSB, has a 2010 membership for Map My Ride. Just let me know and you can access with username and password.

Team OSB said...

we suggest the Wed offical is a bust. perhaps we can utlize the Wednesday route tomorrow night!

Omni said...

Turbo,

From my read of things, each "rider" needs their own MapMyRide account to participate (fortunately they are free). MapMyRide is likelyy using this contest as a recruitment drive to draw new members {in the hopes some of them will upgrade to paid accounts}.

One person (perhaps you) would need to register the team and attach the roster of riders.

Smoothy,

Bad news. Likely can't ride tomorrow , Thursday. I work days Friday and next week. Bubbles and I are away July 1-11 inclusive. The next possible ride is July 16 I hopefully will be in better shape when I get back.
For all those out there I can ride in the evenings ie 530on any day.
Oh yeah Smoothy would you have any 7 day samples of lenses in the Fredericton office I could get as I have one set left and new pack ain't in.

Dish said...

Anyone up for a ride on Thursday evening? Going to skip tonight with the rain.

Dish:

I will likely join you, but I am not sure. If I go, I plan on meeting at the SS at 5:30.

I’m sorry if I’m hijacking the thread, but I need some HRM / GPS info. I think a few of you have a Garmin 305, how does it work with the cadence meter? The best feature from Garmin is probably the Connect website. What is your experience with it?

The other option I’m looking at is a Suunto 3td w cycling pack. You can get a GPS pod, but it’s not great.
Cheers

Omni said...

RJ,

I have had a Garmin Forerunner 305 for 2-3 years now and it has worked well ... a little bulky on the wrist, but fine on the bike.

A couple (maybe three) weeks ago, I posted a invitation for a group order for the cadence sensor unit (GSC10) on the blog and only had one taker (Leah).

The sensors arrived this past Friday and I installed mine on Monday. Installing the sensor and associating it with the Garmin took <15 minutes. I have completed only three rides since, but so far the sensor is working flawlessly.

The only problem I encountered was the spoke magnet would not accommodate the bladed spokes on my Mavic Ksyriums - but this is a common problem with all speedometers and why the Ksyriums came with their own spoke magnet. The magnet fit fine on the 'regular' spokes on my other wheels.

Unlike you, I do not consider the Garmin Connect website to be a positive feature, but I prefer to keep my personal data on my own machines. The Garmin Training Center software (comes with the 305 or is available from the Garmin website) will get you started. Their implementation for the Mac is weak - third-party software such as Ascent is better. The Windoze version is a little more functional, but, again, there is better software out there.

I know other folks who have Suunto devices (not the 3T) and are happy with them as well. I am not familiar with Suunto's provided software or whether their devices are supported by third-party applications.

RJ said...

Thanks for the great feedback Omni! Just to recap here is my list of priorities for an HRM / GPS:

1 HRM function
2 Cyling specific (cadence, speed and distance)
3 GPS

By reading your review I would say the 305 is the only choice, as it seems like the cycling functions are decent and the HRM is ok as well. For me the GPS is important but not at the expense of the other features. If the Sunnto had a good GPS I would consider it.

Turbo said...

For Me The Garmin 305 is the best toy I have in my inventory. Lots of features and can be used multi sport. also can preload routes if your visiting a new area. Screen is small but it will tell you if off course.
On occasion the HRM is out of wack, and GPS can take a few minutes to locate satellite. (minor stuff) Only issue i have had with cadance meter is after working/washing,transporting bike. and magnets get moved.
Their is a newer version of the forerunner just more Quid

Omni said...

RJ,

If you want cycling specific and/or 'real' maps, look at one of the Edge models ... as Turbo said, more quid.

If you want to use it for running and/or skiing as well, then stick with the Forerunner family.

The Forerunner 405 and 310XT are newer and do offer much more .. other than price.

Since the 305 is the 'older' model, you can usually find it selling (w/ HRM) for $175 - $190.

Mel said...

Rat, I believe your lenses have arrived at the office, if you haven't heard from my office, call them, 459-1222. I am also taking a vacation July 1-16 so let's connect when we are back in F'ton.

For all you talking Garmin's check out this link:

There is still commuting tomorrow and Wednesday before my vacation. See you on the road!

Yesterday I attended the Hadley Challenge prep meeting and we got talking GPS. Well I’m an avid mountainbiker and I definitely like to map my mountain rides. Here are some negatives on the 305:

1 Samples only every 15m?
2 Foliage and thick brush can limit reception
3 Very poor with altitude

I’m leaning more towards and Edge now. Yes they are bricks, but if the GPS is more functional than the Forerunner, it just may be worthwhile. Anyone know how resistant an Edge is in an mtb crash? They do look durable.

Hey Stinky
I was riding with Sebastien yesterday. We did Mactaquac and got to the dam at 6ish when and got hit by a massive downpour. I was stronger than any shower I’ve been in!

I'm going shopping for new bike clothes. The price to become the most coordinated may be cheaper than my bar tab tonight :). Good investment I say.

Omni said...

RJ,

Any of the "sports" GPS suck when there is not a clear view of the sky (i.e. foliage) .. it has to do with a few factors, like the type of {non-helical} antenna they use. I do not think you will find the Edge much better than the Forerunner (though it does have a barometric altimeter).

When I'm out marking/cutting trail around Crabbe for my Ultra, I carry an eTrex and leave the forerunner at home. If you want to play in the woods, you need a hand-held with a better antenna and {preferably} a barometric altimiter to correct the wonkiness of the GPS elevation measurements.

T-Wad, you had your chance last year to get in on the 2010 OSB kit. Can't beat those co-ordinates. I plan to to the home/mazz/mac loop before friday ride. leaving home @3pm. let me know if anyone able to join.

Hey Smoothie,

I plan to ride in the morning, earlier the better... You just post what time you plan to take off, I can meet you at your place, getting back early would work best for me as well...

Mel said...

Early could mean 7:00 but that sounds really early for a Sunday but 8:00 seems late. So, how about 7:30? I'll look for you outside (don't ring the doorbell). Anyone else? We will ride by and pick you up!

Donut: 7:30 on Broad Street, looks good!

Sounds good Smoothie, I'll be right along..

Well we have some OSBers doing races today - No Doubt and Bubbles are doing the sprint duathlon and Herc is doing the Triathlon. The event is at CFB Gagetown this am. The Du's are at 8am and the Tri at 9am.

Go Team!

If it is not raining I will ride after work about 430 if anyone can't get out early

Hi Folks,

Great rides on Friday and Sat. Hope all races are going/about to go well today!

I'm off to Montreal for about 5 weeks, so I won't be out during July, but I'm looking forward to riding there and become a cycling monster so that I'm ready for Wednesday pulls when I return in August!

In other news, there's a neat project in Canada called 'The Otesha Project' that is a youth-led organization that promotes sustainable living, local food, low-impact travel, etc. They cycle across the country doing workshops, etc., and are going to be in NB in Sept./Oct. this fall.

If any of you have contacts for places they can stay (sometimes they camp in my back yard, so even that's an option), or schools that might like to have workshops, connect with them. I've pasted a little blurb below.

Safe riding, and see you in August!
