Day 1 Wow, what a day so far and we still have 100km to go or so we think. The riders are probably the ones the least in the loop. We did a ride along event which is quite the adjustment on the road with new riders not necessarely following the same rules. Right now, we are being shuttled from Abertsford to some other locality in BC so we can do our last ride for the day. When done, we will be shuttled to Vernon. I have quickly learned that to survive, I just do what I’m told…Sarah went down on the bike but she’ll be ok…many had flats but the mechanics are fantastic in fixing the problem quickly and making sure the rider reenters the formation safely. As I mentioned before, it is quite the learning curve for me to ride in groups and many have taken it upon themselves to give me tips and straightened me out. It was a great start at Kitts beach this morning in Vancouver and I’m surviving. For those following this, please share with your contacts and help me make my ride worthwhile so I can reach my goal of $25,000 to help the cause of cancer that affect children. More later… Je vais alterner en anglais et en français et j’écrirai en français la prochaine fois…tout va bien mais ma journée de pédalage n’est pas terminé… Ciao, Monique
Re the Friday night ride...should we make this a spouses ride? There seem to be many spouses new to riding and interested in riding. This could be a designated spouses ride where we all commit to enjoying being together and riding at a very social pace. For instance here are the spouses I know of, who are doing some riding...Turbo's, Mayo's, No Doubt's, Mooze's, Woody's, Jamie's, and Bejing Bubble's (AKA Rat)and I am sure I may have missed some... Anyway, just a thought. If not, then ...hammer.
Need some carbon fiber bling for your bike? Or maybe just a more comfortable bar? See the following link for the FSA K-Wing carbon handlebars I have for sale:
I hear that today's road race in Memramcook was more thrilling than the Pro Tour. Adam soloed 3/4 of the race to reel in a 40 second TT deficit and finish 1st on the GC - by 1 second! Brilliant riding Adam!!
Ok so we started out with a 9k TT. It was downhill. I am heavy. I had a 55t on the front and 11t on the back. I should have killed those guys. Who wins? the 120lb Stuart with the junior gears! (52t & 14t). What the hell? So he beats me by 39 seconds and I land like 6th or something. BTW, my TT effort was my best ever. Never dug so deep in a TT before. I maintained 175bpm throughout and then killed it at 179bpm on the final hill and pretty much popped. Ugh, anyway. So we start our 80k road race. 8laps of 10k. We've got like 20 guys in the Elite start. Notables were Cory Jay (former team canada member from PEI), Stuart Wight (skinny bugger from Team Hot Tubes), Justin T., Brian McKewon, Shawn Smith (Saint John), Cris Barr (NS), a few canada games athletes and of course... my nemeis, Lorenzo. So in the first 2 laps, we attack each other a little bit, but nothing serious. People hang in the pack. Won't pull through and keep hanging on the lead rider like a bunch of fleas. I swear, everytime you pulled, you had to veer off to the side and slam your breaks on to get the next guy to pull through. This is normal though in Atlantic races. Most riders ride defensive and no one wants to take any chances. So the 2nd time around the course, on a set of pretty good hills, I got a run for it and pressed the pace. Not to break away, just to soften the legs. No one follows. So I end up with a gap. Just when I'm ready to ease back, I see Cory Jay bridge to me. I figure a skilled experienced guy like him is a good guy to break with, so we go. We work together pretty good for a bit and then the sky opens up and starts to hail and poor rain. I figure this actually helps us a bit as the peloton probably gets very uncomfortable in the dangerous conditions and maybe a bit disorganized. So all this time, my coach (Luc Arsenault) is out on his motorcycle riding up and back giving times to us on how far ahead we are. He says 1:15, 1:20 and as much as 1:25. After awhile Cory starts to say he's hurtin. He said he'll work with me as long as he can, but he doesn't have 80k in his legs. He said, "you're the strongest guy out here and you deserve the win man". So at the start of lap 7, just as we crested the finish line, Sheila says the peloton has just turned the corner in the distance. I got pissed. I didn't realize the corner was 1:25 behind. So I growl out, "They haven't caught us yet!" So then I step it up a bit and Cory popped. He said, "No one's catching you man!" Then he yelled ahead, "Go, go, go!" So I settled in and did a solo TT for the final 20k. on the final lap Luc told me I had 1:20 or something. So I stepped it up and pushed as hard as I could. By the midway point of the lap I knew I took the stage but knew I needed around 40 seconds from the TT to win the GC. So I tried to not get too excited and stay focused. at the end of each lap there was a long fairly steep climb and then the finish is at the crest of a 200m ~18% incline. So Luc comes up to me just before the set of hills, tells me whats left in the course and that, essentially, I can do it. So I dig deep and hammer up the hills with my semi cramping legs and finish the stage by myself. I then turn right around and go to the finish watching for the pack to see if I made up enough time. Of course, the guy who one the TT (Stu) is leading the pack up to the finish. I check my watch.. it looks like they were 30-35 seconds behind. Right away, I figure I lost it. Everyone moves back to the registration site and within 5 minutes, I hear I won the RR by 40 seconds. 1 second more than my deficit in the TT. My first notable victory and the first time I've ever finished ahead of Lorenzo. Hope to have more results like this. The reports will be shorter though, I promise :).
Super ride!! Thank You all for coming back for me!! I was totaly shure, that I was in for a solo ride back! I was cool with that. It was sooo much nicer to ride back with You all.
Reminder to the 9 riders on the Cancer ride next week. Photo opp tonight 6:15 at Odell Park, meet in parking lot. Bring all your gear and smiling faces.
Can we just wear our kit? If we are going to ride there, it will be quite warm, what with the vests and arm warmers and all. Is anyone riding before...after...both?
Phote opp. Do what works for you, I thought that it would be cool to get some different looks from the kits. Also if we had 2-4 bikes and everyone with their helmets. Just so they know it's not a lawn bowling team, (not that there is anything wring with that) Firebird, bring your mini cooper PLEASE NORE: This is all about the pictures so please have some patience and expect to spend some time to get worthwhile pics. No ride posted or planned.
For anyone riding up Carriage Hill today (Thurs) or tomorrow...they've done some patching and there's some small loose ashphalt around. I got in a real mess yesterday at lunch. ;-) Hope to see y'all tomorrow night.
Rat and I have a committment at 5pm tomorrow night (graduation celebration for a family friend). We won't be able to ride but will drop by Zorro and Kathy's afterward for a drink. Have a fabulous ride!
Friday night Zorro's 382 Inglewood Drive(Sunshine Gardens) little known facts What was the name of Zorro's horse? What color was he? Zorro used two different horses during the series. Well, actually multiple horses were used for different stunts and tricks, but they all represented Zorro's two horses. The main one, Tornado, was black, and was seen in the majority of the episodes. At the start of the second season Diego visited the city of Monterey and it would have been difficult to explain where Tornado came from when Diego became Zorro, so the writers introduced a new horse. This one, Phantom, was white, and was given to Zorro by a dying soldier. It was never explained where Phantom was hidden or what became of him when Diego returned home to Los Angeles.
Great night, Thanks Kathy and Zorro. YES we did ride, one of those gritty (feel like a kid) rides. rode: Zorro, turbo, Susan and Ma-yo-done. Jridge planned to ride but chose the wrong start line. (Damm Rookies) Yet another fine social OSB family gathering, it's all good PS-Stinky alive and well no need to send her flowers.
I didn't ride the ride but I did ride earlier to work and back (ask Rat) but I made the social, thanks Kathy and Zorro, it was great. Let's see what the weather holds for us this weekend.
There has been interest from new/more riders on purchasing OSB Kits (2008 version) I just contacted LG and await reply, with order (min) details Please forward me a note if you would be interested email Rudi3@rogers.com

Posting from Jason B. Hutchings A few days ago we were to meet a teen and his family. The teen had been battling cancer for the past several years. Unfortunately, the boy died two days before we arrived. However, the family requested that we come to the funeral home. We rolled into Wawa, Ontario and headed straight for the funeral home. I think the experience will stay with me for a long time. Seeing an 18 year old boy in a coffin… Who died from cancer… Is wrong…. It truly is the face of cancer and the reason why we are riding across the country.

I shouldn't have a vote since I don't have a spouse and and can't ride Friday night, but it sounds like a great idea to me.

Ensure all male cyclists are at attention in the same direction.
We should be ok, unless Woody shows up.
