Went for a ride this am, did the posted loop in 33.7kph. If the group ride is not at least 34kph, I win the Big Sugar tickets. :) It is about 66k. The on-ramp from Hanwell rd to the TCH is clear but shortly after there are lots of rocks for about 1.5k. Also there is about a 100m stretch of broken windshield glass near the sign about the last duel in NB.

I'm sitting here, watching the Tour with my legs up. Make that my tired legs! That was a very athletic ride this evening! Of course we were trying to beat the rain and we almost made it (not quite). Thanks Donut, Jazz and Zorro for waiting (a bit) for me, much appreciated! Gotta go clean my bike (as soon as the tour is over)

Donut said...

That was a great ride tonight indeed, glad I got home in time to make it.. The rain did make a mess of the bikes, however it was still quite refreshing... Thanks Boyz..

Hmmm,,, We have all been fortunate to have OSB bring together our similar passion for cycling. For most of us it has become so much more as the Friendships grow.
Today friendships are weighted with sorrow as we regret to inform all of a tremendous loss to the Versloot Family. With the passing of (Husband, Father, Brother and dedicated Dairy Farmer “Arthur”.
While most of us share our lives, Cookie has also shared his family with OSB. As we have all experienced “The Versloot Home” and know the true meaning of Family.

To George, and the entire Versloot family.
Please know that we are all thinking of you during this difficult time and pray for your strength.

A well-known and highly respected local dairy farmer died early Monday morning after his vehicle struck a moose on the Trans-Canada highway outside Perth-Andover.

Arthur Versloot, 42, was returning from an agricultural event in Quebec with two other farmers when their car struck the animal at about 2:30 a.m. near mile-marker 115.

District 10 Sgt. Marc Violette said the car lost control, crossed the median, and came to rest in the ditch on the opposite side of the highway.

The other two male passengers escaped the crash with minor injuries.

"They were walking, coherent, conscious. They had scrapes and scratches and bumps and bruises," said Violette.

Tim Blom, Versloot's brother-in-law, said this is a devastating blow for the tight-knit family and a staggering loss for the local farming community.

He said Versloot loved his wife Karen, had four beautiful children and was especially close to his three brothers, three sisters and parents.

Blom said he was a devout Christian, was active in his church and involved with the local 4-H clubs.

"He was a fantastic father," he said, exhaling heavily into the phone. "He was always willing to help. He was involved in the (efforts to help with the Bourque's barn collapse).

"He's a big member of the local farming community and he was an excellent brother-in-law. Family was very important to him. He was a terrific husband and he loved being involved with farming."

When The Daily Gleaner asked Blom to share some memories about his brother-in-law, he paused to explain what was going on to several other family members in the room.

He was emotional when he returned to the conversation, explaining that he just received the perfect description of Versloot from the man's young son.

"I was speaking with his brother when Arthur's son Austin, who is 10 years old, overheard the conversation and said, ?You tell him my Dad was awesome,'" said Blom, his voice cracking with emotion.

Versloot took great pride in the family business, Combination Holsteins Ltd., and in the reputation his father George built over many years in the local farming industry.

"Everybody knows them. They know the Versloot name as being associated with helping people. They help anybody at any time," he said.

"That's the type of person his father is and that's how all the kids are. That's how they were raised."

He said the family is making arrangements with a local funeral home for a service that will happen later this week.

"He was a devout husband, a terrific father and a farmer through and through," he said.

"Farming isn't a job, it's a life. And it was a life he loved."

Dish said...

George,

The few 'Cookie' Rides I made it on definitely showed me how willing the Versloot family was to open their doors to others. I'm terribly sorry to hear about Arthur, and I'll be thinking of you, Eric and the rest of your family over the next little while.

If there is anything I can do at all to help please let me know.

George

You can tell by the heart-felt words left here today just how much your friendhip means to all of us and how much we suffer this loss along with you and your family.

Know that Sonya and I are thinking of you all as you make your way through this and know that the same positive energy that we all feel when we ride with you will be directed back your way all week in prayers and thoughts.

Hope to ride on your rear wheel sometime soon and if you think that being surrounded by old friends (and new) will help in any way, please consider joining us for the ride and/or maybe even just for a beer on Friday night.

I am back from vacation and someone had to work! Should I look for a fellow commuter tomorrow morning in front of MacLeans Sports? It is going to be a great morning!

rat said...

Smoothy,

Is there commuting this week cause I am in for Wed and Thurs. Likely drive over to your place and leave with you.

ALERT! Frederictons own Paris to Roubaix on the Lincoln Rd from Nevers out just past Phils Auto. Short term pain for nice new 4k of rd.

Stephen Dixon said...

George,

I can't imagine how you feel. I have 2 younger brothers and it scares me to eve try to think about it. The tears on my cheeks thinking about all of the people Arthur meant so much to make me realize and appreciate how precious we all are to one another.

Arthur touched people far and wide... Dawn and I talked this morning about his role and leadership in 4H, and then the first person I saw at work this morning at SNB also knew him from 4H and respected him a great deal as a professional and a person.

George... Dawn and I are thinking about you and your family and Arthur's young family and our prayers are with you and them.

Hard to follow Cookie's note with anything that seems worth talking about, but I do want to say thanks to my teammates fior the great ride last night - Zorro, Jurgen/Ryder, Dish and the incomparable Smoothie who put in an amazing 113km's yesterday and still had the strength left for some wicked pulls coming down the river.

It was 70km's of fun with some pain and lots of "athleticism" thrown in. With considerable pain in the heart, it was good to hurt and to feel alive.

Of note, we may finally have found an appropriate and fitting nicknname for Jurgen. We were ridign along, talking about the TDF, and our Canadian, Ryder, being the "Most Aggressive Rider" when Jurgen literally blew past us and took off up the road. I think "Ryder" could stick here. In every sense of the name/word, he is a "Ryder"! Under OSB nickname bylaw B-29A, I submit this for consideration.

With so many great riders in the Tour, it's hard to say you have a favorite..but Jens has to be at the top of my list. Check out this video of him after yet another insane crash yesterday. "the man of steel"!

BC Greg and I hoofed it up to Millville yesterday afternoon in the heat. He laid the smackdown on me right at the crest of the big hill in Zealand. I broke. But soon caught up and made it rest of way together. 32.0 Avg. Very high heart rates. Lots of good climbing. Afterwards, had latte's and a swim in the lake. Very civilized.

Was great to have everyone over on Friday! Eco Gurl is now in training for her second Ride n Ribs. And don't forget the ride to Grand Lake next Saturday morning!
