looking to go 10,000 this weekend with a 40+k ride either Sat or Sun am. I do work the midnight shifts so a ride starting at 0930 allows me to get home, changed and back to the SS centre. Would love to have some company as I roll it over.
Rat: I would like to be with you when you turn 10000, however, I am going to Tracadie tomorrow late morning. I was contemplating riding out the Nashwaak and have Marisa pick me up along the way. In the past I have made it to Boiestown. Would you consider riding part of the way with me and then you can turn back? Ride to Durham Bridge? I am close to my milestone as well. Let me know what you think. Dress warm whatever you do!
The Radical Edge club is hosting its annual cyclo-cross race at the Forestry Complex Sunday. 'Cross is fun. If it sounds at all appealing to you, come on out and race. You don't need a 'cross bike: a mountain bike (take the bar ends off, if you have them) is just fine, and so probably is any bike with a bit of knobby tread on the tire. It's 45 minutes plus a lap and you won't need a licence. Details here: http://www.velo.nb.ca/flyers/F%27ton%20Cross%202009%20Flyer.pdf
Also, we could use help setting the course up Saturday and a few people to marshal Sunday. If you're available around 1:00 p.m. Saturday (Nov 7) to stroll around the Forestry Complex admiring nature and perhaps do a bit of raking and place a few stakes and some tape, please send me a note. Also please send me a note if you or someone you know aren't racing and wouldn't mind marshaling Sunday's race. If you're going to be there anyway spectating or cheering, you probably won't even notice you're marshalling. Thanks!
I aam in for 0930. I too wish to be donee by 1130 at the latest. A ride of 45-50k will accomplish that. We can decide the route when we meet up at the SS
Smoothy, I like your idea but the route would make it too long for thr time alloted.
Fredericton's Elizabeth Seiffert is hoping for clear sailing on Saturday in Clearwater, Fl.
With Hurricane Ivan expected to bypass - or go through - the course by then, Seiffert will be competing in the 45-49 age category at the Foster Grant Ironman 70.3 World Championships.
"I'm really hoping to get on the podium, which is top five," said Seiffert, a national team triathlete from 1993-1998 and a 2007 Fredericton Sports Wall of Fame inductee.
"Everything would have to go perfect, but I'm kind of looking for a good result."
There will be more than 1,800 competitors in all, including upwards of 60 in Seiffert's category. The event consists of a 1.9-kilometre swim, 90K bike ride and 21K run.
"There are some names I know, for sure," said Seiffert, who qualified by finishing second at a half Ironman in Rhode Island on July 1. "This will be my fourth half Ironman this season. I did two Olympics (distance triathlons) as well, one in Nova Scotia, the other in Parlee Beach and I won both.
"This will be the end of my season," she said. "It's worlds, but it is just another race so anything can happen. I'm not going to judge my season on this race, but I really am hoping things will come together and it will be a great day.
"Having said that, the course is flat. Cycling on flat is good but it's got to be fair as well. There are tendencies to clump up and form groups on the bikes, so it might not be as fair as it could be.
"So there are other factors that will be out of my control."
Seiffert and husband Steve were scheduled to fly out of Bangor, Me., this morning.
"I'm her biggest fan - and bike mechanic," Steve said with a chuckle, adding, "I'm also her gopher: go for this, go for that.
"I'm really proud of her," he said. "She's going to be 46 this year and she's still going strong and racing strong."
"Steve's been instrumental in achieving a lot of my goals," Elizabeth said, "just because he's so supportive. I'm working full time running a business and training is almost a part-time job.
"So a lot of little things get left out and Steve picks up where I leave off," she said.
"I'm really lucky that way. I've been at this a long time and sometimes I wonder why I'm still doing it.
"But, you know what, I enjoy it so much and I like to see how fast I can keep going with the aging process happening too. It's good that I'm racing within my age class, but I kind of like to stay on top."
Seiffert says Fredericton - a scenic city and a safe spot-" has provided a great community of support.
"The sport involves cycling, swimming and running and there are so many people now into all three sports," she said. "So there's a tremendous group of like-minded people. They encourage my racing and support my racing and make me want to be as enthusiastic as they are.
"Everyone enjoys the sport and the benefits it brings (health-wise)," Seiffert said.
Way to go Rat, 10000km...wow!! Hey Bubbles, see you Friday a.m for a run? Doug's fever broke 2:30 this morning. He sounds better. He still doesn't have much energy. We only talk via phone or I peek through the door. He is confined to spare room. What a bad virus. I open the door and spray lysol every now and then. He is improving
Working early shift Friday 0600-1400hrs. Plan to leave Mactaquac @ 1430 and spin home via Ridge-Holyoke, North side. can call me at 447-7701 if you'd like to meet up.
Great outing for your children or grand kids, or heck even the snotty nose kid up the street.

Imaginations will flourish courtesy of Linsey Pollack’s original creations. Hailing from Australia, Pollack is a composer, musician and instrument-maker. In Cycology, Pollack takes on the persona of Professor Squealy Deetbum, the world’s leading researcher in Cycology (the art of playing the bicycle). In his exciting lecture he will demonstrate the fundamentals of bicycle music and record sounds and loops of percussion, wind and string sounds coming right from his trusty bike. Professor Deetbum takes you past the expected and beyond to new musical imaginings. Recommended for ages 4 and up.
I'm going to go for a spin Saturday morning before the bad weather. Goal is to put it 71 kilometers to reach a milestone. Is anyone wanting to join in for all or some of this? Company appreciated. Meeting time and route can be adapted to accommodate all cyclists.
Smoothie I too am on a mission, not as lofty or close as yours (thats what an aloof October, put you at)but would love to join you. 10am at SS would work for me.
Turbo: It should be 4 degrees with light winds by 10 o'clock so I will see you there! Anyone else? Cycling in the a.m. will enhance your appetite for the evening!
Thanks for the great ride guys. Smoothie,Pebbles,Zorro,Turbo, and Donut. Congrats to Smoothie on achieving his milestone. Ride started off chilly but ended up really nice. I've come to realize that I may need some booties, the extra layer of duct tape just isn't cutting it.
Hey Rat, the weather isn't looking so good for Friday, I think I'm going to take my days off this rotation, what do you think about a ride Wednesday or Thursday??
I can ride on Thursday am, leaving any time up until 1230. I have a meeting on Wed am 'til noon and have a course to prepare for in the afternoon so can't ride. If the weather is fine I can ride anytime on Friday.
If anyone is interested in a VO2 max test, there is a Masters student at UNB that's looking for one more subject. He'll need you for 3 seperate 1hr sessions. Email me if you're interested and I can send you his contact. adam.douthwright@rogers.com
OMG! What a great day for a ride! Sorry guys. I got home from my meeting and had to run a couple of errands and it was too nice to be inside after an hour of studying so made a quick decision to ride at 230pm for 50k.
Thursday am ride from SS. 0900 or 1000? Decide on a route from there based on temp and wind and distance able to go.
I clearly need a new job...what do you people do for a living? what a day out there, went for a walk at lunch and just thought about my bike. Hope you all had a great ride
Yes Donut it was a great morning for a ride and I think the afternoon was even better for Turbo, mind you he didn't have Pebbles and Donut to ride with like did.
My bike ride today cost me $200!!! I went to Crabbe for the open house and to bring groceries to my cottage. My name was in the draw for a free season's pass. I brought my bike to ride home with the wind, mostly downhill, it was a great 50K!!! I left at 3:00 to get home before dark. Only drawback, my name was drawn for the season's pass at 4:00. You had to be there to win!! They drew another name. I never win anything, maybe my luck has changed, when is the next 6/49????
