Thanks Rat for pulling me in. I just put a downpayment on a good trainer so I can train this winter and be hill ready next year. see ya next week

Very enjoyable ride today! Thanks to Leroy and JG for pulling me to the line and "letting" me "win"! Everyone should look at this poster for the Tour de Vin next weekend. It would be nice to have us all in the event. Click on:

Help me! Bubbles is on the defensive and i am caught in the crossfire. According to Bubbles the season is over and she was there when it counted, like in front of Pebbles at the top of the hills.

Beware Herc and be afraid be very afraid!

turbo said...

Guess we shouldn't tell Bubbles it was Rat's idea to nominate Herc.
Just kidding, As a group we asked Bubbles if she would mind and there was no reply so we thought it was ok. She can earn it back. The guys just need a shoulder to dry on every now and then.
PS- Thanks for the burger Mel. I'm sure Cavindish does the same. :-)

Bubbles,
Guess I peaked a little late in the season. I will have to aim for July/August next year.
It was a fantastic ride today.

Oh Turbo, what have you done? I have to run with both of those regal cycling divas on Monday morning and it's not going to be pretty. Although... I DO like a good cat fight....

Anyone up for an afternoon ride, anytime after 1pm, 50-60km length.

Cookie, I sense your fear and I am truly sorry that you will be collateral damage as this thing comes to its natural conclusion. (and yes, sadly, there can only be one outcome,of which I have no free will,ie testicles,to say).

OK,OK...as you know, I never ride in the fall. It has historically been cross country season and the time when I focus on my running. This year is no different (just ask No Doubt), he has the details.

I am pleased for Herc to take the Queen Crown for the fall, she has so earned it this year!!

I will be back at it in the spring and would suggest that some of you (who shall remain nameless but whose names begin with "P","D","Z" "T" and "C") plan some serious spinning this winter. All I can say is....you better be ready, cause I will be!!! Game on...

Kenya's Kenneth Mungara ran the fastest marathon on Canadian soil Sunday in Toronto.

Mungara finished in two hours eight minutes and 32 seconds to win the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, defending the title he won a year ago.

The 36-year-old earned $45,000 for the win.

It's the fastest anyone has run the 42.195-kilometre distance in Canada, as the 36-year-old beat his personal best by two minutes. It was almost a minute better than the previous Canadian mark, set in 2007 by John Kelai (2:09:30).

Countryman Chala Lemi was second at 2:08:49, Ethiopia's Gashaw Melese Asfaw was third (2:09:23).

David Jackson of Victoria finished 14th overall as the top Canadian, in 2:24:03.

Another Toronto race record was set when Amane Gobena of Ethiopia was the first woman to cross the line.

Gobena, 23, overtook fellow countrywoman and defending champion Mulu Seboka in the last kilometre and won with a time of 2:28:31. Seboka finished second in 2:29:37 and Haile Kebebush of Ethiopia was third in 2:30:47.9.

Krista Duchene of Brantford, Ont., was ninth (2:50:36).

It's the most successful race in the marathon's 20-year history, organizers said, because of the two record-breaking performances, a soldout race and more than $1.8 million raised for charity.

Around 20,000 runners competed in the half-marathon and five-kilometre races along Toronto's lakefront.

Too Funny... Good comeback Bubbles

The Emergence of the Queen

Without getting over technical, the queen bees emerge days sooner than the same bees would IF they were left as workers. This comes from a solid feeding of Royal Jelly, a glandular secretion fed to the queen by workers during her larva stage. The new queens are tended to by nearly all the colonies bees at one time or another, this touching of the queens allows her scent, known as a pheromone to pass from bee to bee, aiding them in smooth and logical understanding of their duties.

It can not be emphasized enough that pheromones control positive communication throughout the hive. Workers stumble around with no clear idea of what their duties are without the queens scent. Of course, they have enough instinctual sense to create a new queen if there are eggs or young larva to work with. If not, the hive will likely perish at the end of the season.

After escaping her peanut shaped cell the queen is cleaned and cared for by a rotating group of worker bees called the queens court. Again, the court is a small collection of the many thousand of bees that live in the hive. Generally, the court is comprised of 2-week-old workers who are nearing the final stage of their lives, the gathering time. But just before they become foragers a 3 weeks of age, the spend time doing housekeeping duties, including tending to the queen.

On her first day as a queen, she will learn the basic layout of the colony, where the egg laying cells are and she will pick up the improved morale due to her successful birth. She is escorted around the hive, and during this time she meets with many of the workers as they frantically clean cells for the expected "egg laying" that the queen will do over the many months and years ahead.

Donut said...

Sorry guys, not going to be able to make the Fall Classic.

No Doubt said...

Don't cross Bubbles. I'm still recuperating from the beating she gave me 2 weeks ago.

Mel said...

Tomorrow's commute is up in the air, dependent upon the weather. If it looks nice with rain threatening later in the day, I could go for a ride early and drive to work. Post if you are interested in any of these options.

zorro said...

Rat and Pebbles: weather looks good for morning and early afternoon, the fall classic is a go!!! I will see you guys at 800am SS. Anyone else that would like to come is welcome.

Pebbles said...

Zorro,
Looking forward to the ride tomorrow. See you 8 am at SS. I wonder if Rat will have his new helment.

Rat said...

My new what?
I'm there. I actually thought of commuting with Smoothy as we get into Oromocto byabout 0820 and then get picked up by the Tims/Sobeys over pass. Then i got to thinking how are we gonna get to where we are going? It seems silly to take 3 vehicles. What are you guys thinking for travelling.
Oh sorry Smoothy as logistically it would be too much for me to be picked up unless the others think it is okay.

zorro said...

Hey Rat : just reading blog at 721am or I would have replied about commute. SEE YOU AT 800AM AT ss

Jazz said...

yes, I am still alive and hope to ride again soon...if not considerably weaker than the last time I rode with y'all. I'd like one more ride up the Kingsley with Rat in hot pursuit before the snow flies!

In the meantime, a post from our Vancouver Chapter...

"While a power meter is certainly an important tool for a professional cyclist, the bulk of them are of course sold to amateurs who misinterpret their amateur status and poor results as signs that they need to spend a huge amount of money on a power meter when in fact their amateur status and poor results are actually the very reasons they don't need a power meter. If you're an amateur, buying a power meter to train is like hiring an accountant to tell you how broke you are or like buying an iPhone just to check your Cannondale stock. Yet amateurs not only buy power meters, but they think $1,000 for a power meter is actually cheap. Clearly then, I will make a fortune when I introduce my own power meter at next year's Interbike, since it will be the cheapest and most accurate one ever. Yes, for $5 you'll get an LCD display which constantly flashes the message, "You suck.""

I am travelling to Conecticut this weekend for my sister in law's 50th birthday so I will not be riding. In that it is a 900k drive, does anyone have a portable DVD player I can borrow to make the trip go more quickly? Mine was stolen in Montreal! Plus, since I am asking this on the OSB Blogg site, any Tour videos one of you can loan for the weekend?? Thanks,

rat said...

I think we should buy a team portable DVD player for occassions just like smoothy's. We have a sign out system like a library. Oh yeah and a liquor account at AlcoolNBLiquor, for moments just like Smoothy's.

OOOOH, I just ahd a warm flash, as I just remember that we still love Mitch

Mel said...

Rat: I have decided to try to commute to work since the weather looks reasonable. I think it will close in to rain in the afternoon. I will either try to hitch a ride with one of two dentists who work in Oromocto and live near me or get Marisa to come out and pick me up. Blog or email me, I will check the web in the morning. Hope to see you tomorrow. Anyone else is invited to join in!

rat said...

Smoothy,

If it ain't rainin' in the am I will be over o your place to ride with you from there.

Donut said...

Smoothie,

I have a DVD that your welcome to use if you have not already found one. Just left me know and I will drop it of for you..

Mel said...

Donut: It is a long drive so if it is available it would be great! We are leaving Friday morning early so if it is going to be dropped off it should be tomorrow or I can pick it up at your place. I will be at my office on Main Street all day Thursday so that is a possibility too. Many thanks
