Brian McCain wants people to get on board with action against climate change.
McCain runs a charitable organization based out of Fredericton called "The Gaia Project" which has a mandate to educate the public on their environmental impact.

He explained students are a key factor in coming up with plausible solutions for this growing issue.

"We are focused on delivering to students the information they need to think critically and make informed decisions about their actions and their impact on our climate," he explained.

Part of this initiative involves having the environmental science class at Carleton North High School build their own wind turbines. This, he said, will help engage the students.

"These turbines will be about 25 feet high, and capable of generating a couple of hundred watts at most but will enable students to quickly and easily change the number of blades, length of the blades and height of the turbine," explained McCain. "Data acquisition will allow them to monitor the performance of the wind turbine with varying wind speed and various parts and upgrades are available at a hypothetical cost with an ultimate goal to see which generates the most power per dollar."

While they won't generate that much power, McCain said, they provide students experience with a form of power generation that will have a growing use in the future.

"The idea is to enable them to have a hands on, interactive experience with renewable energy, while keeping the economics of renewable energy in focus," he said.

Sophia Dingee is the environmental science teacher whose 16-student class is participating in this environmentally friendly activity. She and McCain have been friends for awhile and when she heard of this initiative, she knew her class would be on board.

It is her hope that her students will establish a better awareness of the world around them and the condition of the environment through this course. She thinks the partnership with McCain has really encouraged their learning in this regard.

"It's easy to tell them what's wrong with the planet and what society has done to contribute to these problems, but it's far more beneficial to the students to have them actually participate in fixing these problems, even if it is on a small-scale model behind our school," she explained. "I think most students would tell you that they prefer to learn through hands-on activities and I am so happy to have the opportunity to participate in this project so that they can do just that."

For the past three years, McCain has been working in the power generation industry, doing consulting on clean-energy projects and spent the past couple of years in England. He sees a big difference between awareness there and awareness here when it comes to climate change and sources of energy.

"I think on the world stage, we're quite a ways behind in realizing this is a problem and we're going to have to adopt new solutions, so I wanted to move back to New Brunswick and see if I could provide something that was maybe missing a little in the education system at the moment."

As for the students, according to Dingee, they are more than inspired about this project and it's really something they can get excited about.

"The class is really enthused about the project and they ask every day if McCain is coming or if they'll be working on the windmills."

Hey guys, well '09 is going to be a big year for cycling in Fredericton. The Rad club is going to start putting on weekly or bi-weekly Crit and TT series (TT Tuesdays and Crit Thursdays). We are going through all the right channels for road closures and insurances. Norm even volunteered to be commissionaire. We will be requiring that those who don't have a full VeloNB licence to purchase a general membership for $30. Mike has everything setup at the shop so you can go in and sign up there. One membership for unlimited events in Fredericton ('09) and also Citizen races elsewhere. He even has some perks for members at the store. The first TT is tentatively scheduled for May 5th and first Crit for May 7th. Full details to come in a few days, but you can go in and pick your licences up now!

Also we'll be starting up some beginner road rides on Monday nights starting in the next few weeks. These will start at around 20-30k distance at 20-25km/h. So if there's anyone you know who is looking to start into road cycling or who would like a nice recovery ride and a chance to help out, this is the ride for them. I'm aiming for a start date of May 11. Cheers.

Adam

WOW,
thats one great video!
I wonder how many scars he has from riding? My fav part is just after he jumps off something people rush over to see where he went.

Out for a ride this afternoon as i have a dat with Bubbles at the Playhouse tonight but will make the 2 weekend rides.

You know the wind is strong and at you back when you do 12k at 41.6k/h. Of course the great humbler is when you head back into that wind at some point. Suddenly yout not the cats ass you initially thought you were.

Have fun tonight and watch out for the otholes and sand.

Sunday morning ride was nice and pretty windy if you like that stuff! 8 riders at the start including newbie Jamie who did extremely well.

In case someone was wondering, I did manage to get home guys at 1:15pm. I must admit that there were stretches into Sunset and Main streets with quite a few low-speed wobbly moments from the tired legs, but I took a 30 minute break at the Dundonald Ultramar and mustered enough energy to climb York and head home to NM. Thanks for showing me the route! 171 km on the weekend (incl. Friday noon), that's a good way to start the year!

Awesome Sunday Ride, 8 riders. Some humbling cross winds, but the tail push back was worth it. Nice to see new people out on the weekend. The Positive Energy is GREAT.
